DENTON – A crew of 11 University of North Texas students is helping kids with cancer love their melons.
The UNT Love Your Melon crew is part of a nationwide program that sells beanies, baseball caps, shirts, and other apparel to raise money for pediatric cancer patients and research.
Their mission is simple – they want to put a hat on every child battling cancer in America.
Love Your Melon was founded by two friends, Zach and Brian, at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota.
So far the LYM program has donated more than 75,000 hats and more than a million dollars to pediatric cancer research.
The Denton LYM crew has held several local events. Those events include handing out beanies to pediatric cancer patients in the hospital and going to a cancer patient’s home to play with them.
UNT’s Love Your Melon Vice-Caption Melinda Ithivongkham said that this program has been beneficial for the cancer patient as well as their parents.
“The campus crew members just go in and kind of help them… just help their kids be happy,” Ithivongkham said. “That’s mostly our goal, just to make them happy, and for them to realize that they’re not alone.”
The UNT LYM crew recently went to a girl’s home to help make her smile.
“We spent the day at her house,” Ithivongkham said. “Her younger brother was there. We did painting, we painted pumpkins, we blew balloons, we just kind of played around with her in the yard. We’re just making her have a good time.”
